Why Pomerol, and what fuels the hype?

Wines from Pomerol are renowned for their prestige and high prices. Some of the most expensive Bordeaux wines hail from this region, such as Chateau Petrus and Chateau Le Pin, each fetching over $5,000 SGD a bottle—several times more than other renowned Bordeaux wines like Chateau Lafite Rothschild. According to Wine-Searcher, Petrus and Le Pin currently rank second and third among the most expensive Bordeaux wines.

Another reason Pomerol stands out as the premier wine region on Bordeaux's Right Bank is its small vineyard areas, which total less than 800 hectares. With around 150 wineries, some as small as 0.5 hectares, this exemplifies the principle that rarity increases value.

The Wine Style

The region focuses on producing high-quality wines predominantly from Merlot. Vineyards with a high sand content in the western part of Pomerol produce light and soft red wines. In the northeastern part, characterized by higher elevation and sandy clay soil, Merlot thrives, producing wines of an elegant and robust style suitable for long-term aging. Some wines are blended with Cabernet Franc, adding floral aromas to the red wines.

Selected Pomerol Wines

At our Pomerol Wine Tasting Night, we offered guests the pleasure of tasting these exceptional wines:

The order from left to right.

  • Château Gazin 2007
  • Château Trotanoy 2007
  • Château Hosanna 1999
  • Château La Fleur Petrus 2004
  • Château L'Evangile 2011
  • Château La Conseillante 2007

During the bonus round, we also tasted wine from the famous and currently one of the most expensive estates in Burgundy—the Leroy Estate, the only challenger to DRC’s dominance.

This Leroy Coteaux Bourguignons 2022 is composed of 1/3 Pinot Noir and 2/3 Gamay, giving it an intriguing tasting profile of raspberries, strawberries, cherries, figs, and bubblegum, complemented by subtle earthiness. The balanced tannins provide a smooth, crisp, and vibrant mouthfeel, making it incredibly approachable even at a young vintage. This wine offers a great comparison to the Pomerol wine style.

Reminiscing the SIP Event

As our guests arrived, we welcomed them with Maison Albert Brenot Chablis AOC 2019, a Burgundy white celebrated for its refreshing qualities complemented by an excellent note of honey. This exquisite wine served as the perfect aperitif, offering a delightful way to unwind after a long week and setting the stage for our Pomerol Wine Tasting.

To complement the wine, we meticulously curated a selection of fine cheeses, sausages, crackers, fruits, and the exceptional 24-month-cured Iberico ham. Each pairing was carefully chosen to elevate the tasting experience, highlighting the nuanced flavors of the Pomerol wines and creating a harmonious balance on the palate.

Our esteemed sommelier, Vito, guided our evening. With his wealth of knowledge, Vito shared insights into the intricacies of wine tasting, offering guests a deeper understanding of Pomerol wines' terroir and tasting profiles. His passion for wine made the event both enjoyable and educational for all attendees, enriching our appreciation of these fine wines.

Another evening highlight was the selection of two prestigious wines—Domaine de Cheval Blanc and Pessac Leognan de Chevalier—which were awarded to our lucky winners.
