2003 was the heatwave vintage, with August temperatures above 40°C. It produced opulent, low-acid wines with roasted fruit, and the northern Left Bank fared best. This Gruaud Larose is 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec. Critics describe ripe dark fruit, earth, thyme and dried herbs, with soft tannins and low acidity.
