Haut-Brion is the only First Growth outside the Médoc, on gravel soils at the edge of the city of Bordeaux. 2001 was overshadowed by the 2000 vintage, but it is widely seen as underrated and has aged very well. This is a Merlot-led blend: 52% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Cabernet Franc. Critics describe cherry, blackcurrant and black fruit, smoke, tobacco, crushed stone, scorched earth, Provençal herbs and black olive.
Drinking well now, with many years ahead.
